Brushing and Flossing instructions American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Care of Mouth After Extractions Your child was given a local anesthetic at the beginning of the appointment, which can result in numbness for the next 1-3 hours. The gums, cheeks, and tongue will feel "fat" and strange, and may result in a biting injury if not well supervised. Post-operative bleeding should be minimal, but the following precautionsshould be taken for the next 24 hours. 1. Leave gauze in place for 30-45 minutes. Additional gauze has been provided should you need to change it. 2. Avoid sucking forces such as drinking from a straw or spitting, as these actions will dislodge the blood clot, which is the first phase in healing. 3. Gentle rinsing with salt water may be started 24 hours after the extractions if desired. If you feel your child is in discomfort, you may use the same medication and dosage that you use to control fever. If this is not enough, please call the office. If you have any questions or cause for concern, please call the office immediately.
